How to look a contractor up
- Go to the Division of Consumer Affairs License Verification System at newjersey.mylicense.com.
- Switch to the business search and choose the home improvement business profession.
- Search by the business name or the registration number printed on the contractor's ads, estimate or truck.
- Check that the name matches the one on your contract and that the registration is active.
What registration requires
No contractor business may offer or perform home improvements in New Jersey without registering with the Division of Consumer Affairs, and registration is renewed every year (N.J.S.A. 56:8-138). The registration number has to appear in the contractor's advertisements, on its contracts and correspondence, and on its commercial vehicles (N.J.S.A. 56:8-144).
New Jersey also passed a home improvement contractor licensing law in 2023 (P.L.2023, c.237), and the contract statute now asks for that license number alongside the registration number (N.J.S.A. 56:8-151).
Insurance
A registered contractor must carry commercial general liability insurance of at least $500,000 per occurrence (N.J.S.A. 56:8-142), and the contract must include a copy of the insurance certificate and the insurer's phone number (N.J.S.A. 56:8-151). Call the insurer to confirm the policy is current.
