    Remodeling costs in South Jersey

What homeowners actually spend on kitchens, bathrooms, basements and additions, from published national and Middle Atlantic data, plus how the age of South Jersey's houses moves the number.

    Short answer

Nationally, a major kitchen remodel had a median cost of $35,000 for kitchens under 200 square feet and $55,000 for larger ones in 2025, and a major primary bath remodel $18,000 for primary baths under 100 square feet and $30,000 for larger ones (Houzz). In the Middle Atlantic region, a basement remodel cost about $60,644 and a midrange primary suite addition about $195,129 (Cost vs. Value 2025). The age of the house decides a lot of the rest.

These are published figures, not a Kubat price list. Houzz surveys U.S. homeowners every year about what they spent; the Cost vs. Value Report prices defined projects for the Middle Atlantic states (New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania). We price every project after a free walkthrough.

    How long projects take

Timelines vary with the scope, the house and how long selections and permits take. For a national benchmark, kitchen projects averaged 9.5 months of planning and 5.8 months of construction and primary bathroom projects averaged 8.4 months of planning and 4.8 months of construction among U.S. homeowners who renovated in 2025, according to the 2026 U.S. Houzz & Home Study. Those averages include do-it-yourself work. Planning taking longer than building is normal, and it is where a project's budget is won or lost. Whatever the length, New Jersey requires a home improvement contract to state the dates or time period for starting and finishing the work (N.J.A.C. 13:45A-16.2).

Why the same project costs more in some towns

The price of the work does not change from town to town. The houses do. Older homes are more likely to need new supply lines, wiring and lead-safe work once walls are open, and homes built before 1978 fall under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. Here is how the housing compares across the towns we serve:

What holds its value at resale

In the Middle Atlantic region, a midrange minor kitchen remodel recouped 107.2% of its cost at resale, a midrange major kitchen remodel recouped 49% of its cost at resale, a midrange bathroom remodel recouped 79.9% of its cost at resale, a basement remodel recouped 63.4% of its cost at resale and a midrange primary suite addition recouped 27.1% of its cost at resale, according to the Remodeling 2025 Cost vs. Value Report (www.costvsvalue.com).© 2025 Zonda Media, a Delaware Corporation. The pattern is consistent: smaller, well-chosen updates recover more of their cost at sale than large projects. Large projects are usually about how you live in the house, which is a good reason on its own.

Why do remodeling prices seem higher in some South Jersey towns?

The work costs the same to build; the houses differ. Older homes are more likely to need plumbing, wiring and lead-safe work once walls are open, and owners in higher-value towns often choose finishes to match. Census data on each town page shows the age and value of its homes.
